Curriculum Update
Science:
We finished up our Trees and Forests unit with a unit test this week. We will be moving on to start learning about Wetlands next week! We are very excited to connect our understanding of trees and forests into the closely related area of Wetlands!
Math:
We have been continuing to look at equivalent fractions this week. We have extended this learning to include simplifying fractions.
To simplify a fraction you need to find the greatest common factor between the numerator and denominator.
8 - 1 x 8, 2 x 4
12 - 1 x 12, 2 x 6, 3 x 4
Greatest Common Factor - 4
Once you have found the greatest common factor you need to divide both the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number) by that number. This will give you the simplified or reduced fraction.
English Language Arts
In ELA we have been continuing to look at newspaper articles. We have been examining articles looking for the 5 W Questions and putting them into the inverted triangle. Most recently we have been practicing making interesting and creative headlines to draw in audiences. Students read an article and put a headline in that is interesting and makes sense.
Social Studies
We began our Canadian Geography unit by re-familiarizing ourselves with Canada's provinces, territories and capital cities. We will soon be moving on to looking at each Canadian region through the lens of story, by reading books related to each province and region.
Physical Education
This week we have been focusing on the 3 main skills of volleyball, bumping, setting and serving. We have begun to develop greater control of the ball and have started to play small skirmish games to help familiarize ourselves with the rules.
We are blazing full steam ahead as we head into the winter season and are looking forward to discussing our learning with parents next Thursday November 21, at Parent Teacher Interviews!
